Do you take enough calcium ?

Posted in: main dish, Supplements

.I decided to write this post because I knew for long time that I need to take more calcium daily. Basically I just neglected this fact. I hate calcium supplements and especially chewies, can’t take even one a day, I feel like the dentist starts drilling my teeth when I chew them, yeah it’s that bad. Yesterday my Daily Challenge network sent me the message with the task to learn how much calcium do I need to consume a day. AT first I ignored it , but then decided what the heck I should face this problem at last and I was owed realizing that I take maybe  10% to 25% of my daily calcium dietary allowance. How about that?

I may eat 1-2 slices of cheese, a slice of bread or a tablespoon of sour cream which would be between 6-10% of my daily allowance, sometimes I eat ice-cream or cream cheese in a crepe , but that’s about it.

I found this table at the website of Office of Dietary Supplements and learned that I need much much more than that:

* Adequate Intake (AI) . Information taken from http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/calcium

I need 1000 mg daily, which would include 8 oz. of Yogurt, plain, low fat + Sardines in oil 3 oz (luckily I love them:-) + ½ cup of  broccoli with melted cheese  and 1 cup of Chinese cabbage  in salad and of course ice-cream  and cream cheese. That would be enough calcium for me. And then I thought: ”How many people out there just don’t know how much calcium do they actually need and how much calcium do they  actually take daily.

So I decided to share this with you, to draw your attention and to make you think.

Yes, I know many people take calcium supplements and feel good about it, but why you need to buy expensive supplement when you can eat one ounce of provolone cheese, for example, and get 214 mg out of 1000 mg necessary daily.

Just look at this table prepared by USDA, download it for yourself and remember to look at it from time to time when creating your weekly menu! It’s that simple!

You can incorporate the high calcium food sources in soups, such as beans (see here my soups with beans) or cook some crepes with cream cheese etc. There are millions of delicious sources of calcium out there, so let’s take care of our health this new year. It’s that simple!

Did you know how much calcium you need daily? Do you  and your family take enough calcium daily?
